The Chrono Trigger Prerelease is a sampler ROM given out to magazines and game retailers before Chrono Trigger's release to generate interest and secure sales. The ROM was later ripped, circa 1999. The Sonic 2 Beta was obtained in a similar manner. It holds a special position in the Chrono series, as it is truly exempt from canon; we can only guess at what Prerelease-exclusive content was meant for. It provides a rare look into the development of Chrono Trigger. The Prerelease cannot be played as a full game, and there are several barriers to progressing beyond unfinished areas. One cannot go into [[Guardia Castle]], beyond [[Lab 32]], or beyond the [[Magic Cave]]. It can be explored with codes or an Epoch savestate, leading one to find many interesting areas and items. Enemies that were removed from the final version or slightly varied creep within the game's code, and special areas exist. The Chrono Compendium, in creating this section, exposes and classifies every difference between the Prerelease and the final version. This section's content structure mirrors the parent encyclopedia.

Beyond the Prerelease

Thanks for browsing and exploring the Prerelease. As a final footnote for the section above, it is worth mentioning that the Chrono Trigger US manual shows a saved game called "The Princess is Gone", which was apparently revised to "The Queen is Gone" for the final version. The manual also contains an instance of Fleaver. Thanks to PrincessNadia
