Sealed Chests were created in Zeal in order to house special or enchanted treasure. When Zeal fell, they scattered across the land, eventually popping up in several places as the continents stabilized and Zenan emerged. Several citizens kept the chests, though they could not open them as Mammon Machine energy was required. Once Crono charged up the Pendant, he located and opened the surviving chests around the world. A trick exists to get the lesser item before finding the higher. Examine the items in 600 A.D., but don't take the contents out. Then go to 1000 A.D. and remove the contents; you can then travel back in time and take out the lesser items as well.
