The Chrono Trigger Prerelease holds a special position in the Chrono series; though it can be called an 'alternate dimension,' it is truly exempt from the main course of the series in that it was what might have been, but was not. It provides a rare look into the development of Chrono Trigger. Though information on its origin is not to be found, the Prerelease was most likely ripped from a preview cartridge sent out by Squaresoft to various game magazines for review. The Sonic 2 Beta was similarly obtained in this way, as it is common practice for game companies to release beta versions to reviewers to gain publicity and anticipation for their next projects. The ripped ROM survived, and is now accessible to the public -- though it is still illegal to own. The Prerelease itself contains several walls to progress within; one cannot go into [[Guardia Castle]], go beyond [[Lab 32]], or progress beyond the [[Magic Cave]]. Enemies that were removed from the Final Version or slightly varied creep within the game's code, and special areas exist. The Chrono Compendium, in creating this section, wishes to expose and classify every difference between the Prerelease and the Final Version. This section's content will mirror the parent encyclopedia.

Sakaguchi and Horii discussing the game before release

The Chrono Trigger Prerelease is an unfinished version of Chrono Trigger dated November 17, 1994. It was given to magazines and game retailers as a sample before Chrono Trigger's release to generate interest and sales. The Prerelease could not be played all the way through; barriers to passage were programmed in Guardia Castle, Lab 32, and the Magic Cave. Per the Chrono Trigger Scene Logs, the ROM was first sold on a CD-R collection of Super Famicom games in Hong Kong.

The Prerelease provides a rare look into Chrono Trigger's development. It's full of things that were changed or dropped from Chrono Trigger's final release; we can only guess at what the developers intended in some cases. For that reason, it holds a special quasi-canonical position in the Chrono series. Fans can explore the game's many interesting areas (witnessing different enemies and items) by using codes or an Epoch savestate. This section of the encyclopedia exposes and classifies every important difference between the Prerelease and the final version, and its content structure mirrors the parent encyclopedia. Note that help was provided by The Cutting Room Floor, which has a mutual sharing agreement with the Compendium for proto stuff.
